It came as a bit of a surprise when Apple announced that the new iPad would come equipped with 4G LTE technology. The reports leading up the the announcement were indecisive, but ultimately we got our answer in the form of snappy 4G networking. I had briefly alluded to the problem that building 4G LTE into the new iPad might cause, in my piece outlining what we could expect at the then-forthcoming iPad announcement. That problem involves consumer expectations, and how Apple might handle them.

Possibly related to the demands of the retina display is the finding that the new iPad runs 10 degrees warmer than the iPad 2. A Dutch website used thermal imaging to make the comparison. You can read more on AppleInsider. Not long after this information began circulating on blogs, Apple made an official statement to The Loop, saying that the new iPad operates “well within our thermal specifications. If customers have any concerns they should contact AppleCare.” Most users are saying that it’s only moderately noticeable and that it’s localized to one corner of the device, where the logic board resides. So how warm is it? Consumer Reports said today that the iPad can hit temperatures as high as 116 Fahrenheit on the front and back of the device when playing Infinity Blade II. When the same test was run with the device unplugged, the temperature hit 113. Again, they say it feels warm but not uncomfortably hot.

Apple reported late yesterday that they had sold 3 million iPads the first weekend — a record for the iPad, and nearly equal to the 4 million iPhone’s sold last October with the launch of the iPhone 4S. By way of comparison, Apple sold 300,000 iPads on the first day of sales of the original iPad back in 2010. According to CNET, the figure of 3 million doesn’t include preorders. In the press release, Apple’s Phil Schiller said, “The new iPad is a blockbuster with three million sold―the strongest iPad launch yet.

All signs point to a March release of the iPad 3, with an enhanced Retina display and potentially a faster processor and LTE/4G data speeds. Any one of those would probably be enough for me to upgrade from my iPad 2, so in preparation I looked into selling my old iPad. When I upgraded to the iPad 2, I handed down the iPad 1 to my kids. I plan to repeat that pattern, and that frees up the original iPad. Even though it will be several generations old, my 16GB WiFi iPad 1 was worth over $200 at SellYourMac.com.

It’s just not fair. Ok, now that we are over that, what can we do? How about hiring her 1st cousin? Let me introduce you to SpeakToIt ($1.99). Not a very appealing name, I agree so if you ask her what her name is, she says it’s Sam, just Sam. I refer to her as a 1st cousin because she uses the same voice recognition that Siri uses, Nuance.

It has long been rumored that the new iPad 3, expected to be announced March 7, will come with a 2048 x 1536 retina display — an amazingly high resolution. Now MacRumors has has obtained one of the displays to be used in the iPad 3 and, based on close analysis, has deemed that in fact it is a retina display. Since they weren’t able to power up the display, not having the iPad itself, they resorted to using a microscope to compare the pixel density of the new display with that of the iPad 2. Very resourceful.

There is a little known feature in Facebook that enables you to download and backup your entire profile. This is an important security precaution, should somehow your profile get corrupted, or any other mishap. It is a complete copy of all of the personal information you’ve shared on Facebook. It should be treated as a Val Doc (valuable document) and kept protected. Your profile copy includes your profile (timeline) information (for example your contact information, interests, groups), your wall and/or timeline posts and content that you and your friends have posted to your profile, photos and videos that you have uploaded to your account, your friend list, any notes you have created, events to which you have RSVP’d, your sent and received messages, plus any comments that you and your friends have made on your Wall (timeline) posts, photos and other profile content.
Like I said it is a very comprehensive reproduction of your Facebook life.

Having this information can be very valuable as it enables you to have your complete record so you know exactly what you have shared and can control it. Also if you have lost any photos, etc. after uploading to Facebook, you now have them all back!

Here is how you can download your information from Facebook. Go to your Account Settings page by clicking on the account menu at the top right of any Facebook page and select Account Settings, click on “Download a copy” of your Facebook data, then click the Download button on the following page. You will receive an email with the download information shortly after you do that.

Furthermore, Facebook has implemented some excellent security measures to prevent anyone else from downloading your data. You go through several authentication procedures to make sure that you are you. And you have to confirm your identity prior to completing the process.

One word of warning: Your file contains sensitive information and you should keep it protected by taking appropriate precautions when storing, sending or uploading it to any other services.

Now you can have a complete record of your Facebook profile and postings, just like that!

I’m looking forward to iOS 5.1, which should be coming out soon. It’s expected to fix some major bugs as well as add some new features. A test version of the new software has been in the hands of developers for months, and the bad news is that it still doesn’t address a serious problem with the iPhone 4S. According to many complaints online, and this humongous 114-page thread in Apple’s support forum, the iPhone 4S will randomly mute the phone when a person makes a call.
